We stayed on the 7th Floor with balcony overlooking the Singapore river and the old civic area, offering delightful views day and night. Great location from which to see the central areas of the city. Excellent breakfast with option to sit outside alongside the river, which was most pleasant.

The rooftop pool 'Lantern' is a destination in its own with panoramic views of the financial district, the Merlion public space and looks onto the Marina Bay Sands hotel. With its individual jacuzzis and a fantastic selection of spirits, we found ourselves here every evening to see the city lights come on at night.

We celebrated my birthday and the staff made a big deal and made me feel very special. The afternoon tea was great, the location is perfect, and the toiletries are wonderful. I highly recommend staying here. It is a one-of-a-kind experience. Simply WOW!!! From here, boats left carrying thousands of letters and stories across the seas.

If you visit the hotel today, you will still find two red pillar post boxes, erected in during British colonial rule. The Singapore Club, patronised by the well-heeled, was on the upper floors. With a lounge, reading room, library, card and billiard rooms, the Singapore Club became the socialising and dining spot for high-ranking officials.

The billiard room had six tables and there was a separate, private billiards room that could accommodate two tables. The club bar was feet long. The dining hall faced Battery Road and had a capacity of two hundred. Accommodation for members was also available. The room is now an exclusive lounge. If you have the opportunity to see it, have a look at its barrel-vaulted, coffered ceiling — the only one in Singapore. In the last days before the British surrender, the premises were used as a hospital for British soldiers, with makeshift operating rooms.
