How long collar after spay

This is kind of a tricky one especially if you just adopted your pet from the shelter and they really need a bath or if you forgot to put a towel in your carrier and your cat peed or pooped and ended up rolling around in it during the car ride. If you bathe your pet after surgery you can introduce bacteria into the surgery site, which you do not want to do.

This is super important because you never know if something abnormal is occurring unless you really check it out. Get your pet to roll over and get in a good tummy pet. You want to check for redness, swelling, and discharge. If there is a dramatic change in the incision, you need to bring your pet back the clinic for a recheck. We recommend Elizabethan collars aka e-collars or cone for all of the dogs and cats that have surgery with us.

It is easy enough for you to remind yourself not to scratch at something that hurts or itches, but unfortunately our pets are not capable of this!

The e-collar is a great way to prevent your pet from hurting himself or herself. After Surgery Keep your pet inside and restrict activity for 10 days. This allows tissue time to heal and avoids the incision from opening up. Dogs should be on a leash to go potty. The incision on male dogs is on the scrotum and is meant to remain slightly open for drainage. The incision of female cats and dogs is sealed with surgical glue to help protect it against infection.

If that glue gets wet, it can dissolve too quickly — this means no licking, bathing, or swimming for ten days. Females should be kept separate from males during their recovery time, as mounting could cause the patient harm.

If you have a female dog or cat, her ovaries were removed. Her incision is located on her belly. If you have a male dog or cat, his testicles were removed. His incision will be located directly on the scrotum.

When you take your pet home, look at the incision site. What you see today is what we consider normal. The alternatives to a cone would depend not only on the size of your cat but also other factors like, the severity of the injury or operation, location of the injury, the tissue that has to be protected, etc. It helps in easy navigation as they are not so wide and hence your cat will be able to pass easily through doors and other narrow spaces.

These are preferred to a cone because they are more flexible. Some of these work better than others though it depends on one cat to another. You should ask your vet before you choose an alternative. Yes, dog sweaters are helpful for cats because most cats are mostly of the same size as a small dog. This is a quick but not so preferable alternative for your cat. These sweaters go higher on the neck of your cat. This option is only preferred if your cat has got shoulder or neck injuries.

A flannel or a onesie is also an alternative for a cone. It can keep your cat covered and protected until the healing of its injury. This alternative is for feet or leg injuries as it can also keep their claws covered so your cat does not scratch its injury. This is because your cat can easily get stuck while wearing a cone. It can be tough for your cat to enter and exit the litter box with the cone on.

If your cat is an outdoor cat make sure it does not go out with a cone or until it heals completely. Yes, your cat can sleep with a cone on.

Though it might not be so comfortable for your cat. Your cat will get accustomed to it soon. During spay, it should not be removed for ten to fourteen days. Make sure to follow the instructions of your vet.
